Cycling in the Slovak Paradise: get to know Spiš by bike

The Slovak Paradise is famous for its breathtaking gorges, gorges and hiking trails. The national park also includes varied and equally beautiful cycling routes. Cycle routes of the Slovak Paradise and Southern Spiš

South Spiš offers more than 600 kilometres beautiful cycling routes, of which almost 110 km pass through the Slovak Paradise National Park. Some sections of the road are part of Spišská or Hnilecká cycling routes. The routes are divided into several groups according to difficulty. You can start your cycling adventure in Spišská Nová Ves, Krompachy, Gelnica or in the villages of Hnilčík and Poráč.

More experienced cyclists like to combine several routes and create their own circuits. From the seat of your bike you can explore different parts of the Slovak Paradise, for example Galmus Mountains, a dam named Palcmanská Maša and a number of breathtaking ridge views from smaller or larger hills.

Spiš cycling route

The beginning of the cycling route is in the village Hrabušice. The route continues along dirt roads and turns around Hornád to Spišská Nová Ves. The road continues along the Hornád through several smaller villages. The group of villages ends in Spišské Vlachy. From Vláchy there is a climb to Žehra. The highway ends near the spectacular Spiš Castle.

Hnilecká cycling route

It passes through the whole Hnilecka valley. Most of the tourists start their journey at Mlynki near the railway station and continue around Palcmanská Maša. The route through the valley is lined with picturesque hills and forests of the Slovak Ore Mountains. Thanks to the descent all the time the beauty of the valley can be admired even by the inexperienced and recreational cyclists. The Hnilecká cycling route passes through 11 villages and ends at the Ružín water reservoir.

How to choose the right path?

Cycling in paradise is also suitable for less fit cyclists, but you need to choose the route carefully and not overestimate your abilities. The cycle guide offers routes divided according to difficulty. Less experienced tourists and families with children are recommended to choose easy routes marked “REKREA”. Cyclists with better fitness will surely conquer the routes marked “SPORT”. Adventures with marking “EXPERT” prefer to leave only to true cycling professionals.
